Negombo is famous for its long sandy beaches and centuries-old fishing industry. The shallow waters of the Negombo lagoon provide safe sheltering for seafaring vessels. The Negombo fishing village also was known as Lellama by the locals is located across the lagoon bridge, near the old Dutch gate. This is the second-largest open-air fish market in Sri Lanka. It will give visitors first-hand experience and insight into the local fisher community. The market is loud, vibrant, colorful and smells like fish. You will get to witness fishermen bringing in their day’s catch and how the whole sellers and restaurateurs trade with them. Cycling around the village is also a highly recommended fun activity.

Negombo Dutch port originally built by Portuguese and later redesigned by Dutch in 16 centuries. If you are interested in historical architectural ruins over 300 years old, this is one of the best places. This port was a strategic location in line with Galle, Colombo, and Jaffna ports. In the British era, they built a Prison in this location and today, only a few remain at the location.

If you are visiting the Fishing village in Negombo this ride is a must-do along with that, take a boat ride through the Dutch Canal to witness the fishing activities of the locals, and the birdlife here is amazing also makes a perfect spot to take pictures. You might find the smell in the area is a bit bad but other than that you will surely enjoy the boat ride. The canal is similar to the canals in the Netherlands.

Adam’s peak known as Sri Padian Sinhalese, the sacred footprint is a rock formation near the summit, which in the Buddhist tradition is held to be the footprint of the Buddha. In Hindu tradition that of Hanuman or Lord Shiva and in some Islamic and Christian tradition that of Adam, or that of St. Thomas. It is located in a beautiful hill country and has been a focus for pilgrimage for more than 1000 years. It is also known as “Samanala Kanda” aka “Butterfly hill”, where butterflies go to rest in peace. There is a season to go on pilgrimage to Adam’s peak. Words are not enough to explain the beautiful view of the sunrise from Adam’s peak it is like living up in the clouds.

There are so many awesome experiences one can gain in Udawalawa National Park. It is difficult to select one experience out of it and call it the best one. Because the park lies on the boundary of Sri Lanka’s wet and dry zones, it is framed by soaring highlands and comprised of grasslands and bush forests. Explorers get to see a collection of Flora, Mammals, Birds, Reptiles & Fish in their natural habitats. While we cannot select one favourite activity, however when we go on safari to Udawalawa, it would be unfair if we do not bring up our gentle giants of the earth, Elephants. Udawalawa is one famous destination to see elephants up close and personal in their natural habitats.
